TANGERINE TIGER SHRIMPS (CARIDINA SERRATA VAR. "TANGERINE)
Tangerine Tiger Shrimp (Caridina serrata) The Tangerine Tiger Shrimp is a vibrant freshwater shrimp species known for its bright orange coloration with tiger-like black stripes. Native to southern China, this Caridina species is popular among shrimp enthusiasts due to its hardy nature, unique appearance, and ease of breeding compared to other Caridina shrimp. Appearance Tangerine Tiger Shrimp display a translucent to deep orange body adorned with black or dark reddish stripes running along their sides. Some individuals may have a more solid orange hue, while others showcase intricate patterns. Their eyes are usually black, adding to their striking contrast. Tank Requirements Tank Size: A minimum of 10 gallons is recommended for stability. Water Parameters: Temperature: 68–78°F (20–26°C) pH: 6.0–7.5 GH: 3–8 KH: 1–4 TDS: 120–200 ppm Filtration: Sponge filters or gentle-flow filters to prevent harming delicate shrimp. Substrate: Active substrates (such as ADA Amazonia) help maintain slightly acidic conditions, though they can adapt to neutral pH as well. Plants & Hiding Spots: Live plants, mosses, and driftwood provide shelter and biofilm for grazing. Diet Tangerine Tiger Shrimp are omnivores and benefit from a balanced diet: Staple Foods: High-quality shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and biofilm. Supplementary Foods: Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), protein-based treats (brine shrimp, bee pollen), and natural botanicals like Indian almond leaves. Behavior & Compatibility Temperament: Peaceful and social; best kept in colonies of 10 or more for natural behavior and breeding success. Tank Mates: Compatible with other Caridina shrimp and peaceful nano fish like rasboras, small tetras, and otocinclus. Avoid aggressive or predatory fish. Breeding Tangerine Tiger Shrimp are prolific breeders under stable conditions. Unlike some Caridina species, they do not require brackish water for breeding. Females carry eggs for about 4 weeks, and shrimplets hatch as miniature versions of the adults. Providing a biofilm-rich environment increases their survival rate. Conclusion The Tangerine Tiger Shrimp is a beautiful, hardy, and active shrimp species that thrives in well-maintained aquariums. Their brilliant orange coloration, adaptability, and ease of breeding make them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced Caridina shrimp keepers.
