PYGMY CORYDORAS CATFISH (Corydoras pygmaeus)
The Pygmy Corydoras is a tiny, peaceful freshwater catfish species known for its small size, schooling behavior, and playful nature. Unlike most Corydoras that primarily stay at the bottom of the tank, Pygmy Corydoras swim in all levels of the aquarium, making them a lively and unique addition to a community tank.
Appearance

- Size: One of the smallest Corydoras species, reaching only 0.75–1 inch (2–2.5 cm) in length.
- Body Shape: Slender and streamlined compared to other, more robust Corydoras species.
- Barbels: Small whisker-like barbels around the mouth, used for foraging.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (for a small group, though larger is preferred).
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- pH: 6.5–7.5

- Filtration: Sponge or gentle-flow filters are recommended to avoid strong currents.
- Substrate: Soft sand or fine gravel to prevent damage to their delicate barbels.
- Aquascape: Well-planted tanks with driftwood, caves, and floating plants provide hiding spots and mimic their natural habitat.
Diet
Pygmy Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders, but unlike most Corydoras, they also feed mid-water.
- Staple Foods: High-quality sinking micro pellets and wafers.
- Supplementary Foods: Baby brine shrimp, daphnia, microworms, and crushed flakes.
- Foraging Behavior: They actively graze along the substrate and mid-water, making them efficient tank cleaners.
Behavior & Compatibility
- Temperament: Peaceful and social, best kept in schools of at least 6–10 for comfort.
- Tank Mates: Ideal for nano and peaceful community tanks, including species like small tetras, rasboras, shrimp, and other gentle fish. Avoid large or aggressive fish.
Breeding
- Egg Layers: Females attach tiny eggs to plant leaves, glass, or decor after a mating ritual.
- Breeding Conditions: Slightly cooler water changes and a protein-rich diet encourage spawning.
- Hatching Time: Eggs hatch in 3–4 days, and fry feed on infusoria and powdered foods before transitioning to baby brine shrimp.
Conclusion
The Pygmy Corydoras is a tiny, social, and highly active catfish that brings energy to any small or medium-sized aquarium. Their schooling behavior, peaceful temperament, and adaptability make them a fantastic choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists looking for a lively and low-maintenance species.
